Global Affairs Session 47 03 June 2026 EUROPE AND THE JEWS Faith, persecution and the long return home Jewish communities have lived in Europe for two thousand years, contributing deeply to its trade, science and culture while repeatedly facing expulsion, exclusion and violence. That long history culminated in the Holocaust of the 1930s and 40s, the resurgence of modern Zionism, and the founding of Israel in 1948. In 2026, Jewish life is more concentrated in Israel and North America than ever, even as European communities rebuild in the shadow of renewed antisemitism.
