Chokepoints matter because a narrow passage can influence a much larger geographical and economic system. The Strait of Hormuz is central to Gulf energy exports, while the Strait of Malacca is a critical connector between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands are positioned near the western approaches to Malacca, giving New Delhi important surveillance and operational advantages.

The comparison is not based on identical forms of control. Iran directly borders Hormuz, whereas India does not control the Strait of Malacca. India’s leverage comes from geography, maritime awareness, naval reach and the ability to influence movement across the surrounding sea lanes.

Technically, what is a chokepoint?

A chokepoint is a narrow geographic or infrastructural passage through which a large volume of traffic must pass, creating a natural bottleneck.

  • Concentration of movement: It concentrates flows of goods, energy, data or military movement, making disruption disproportionately impactful.
  • Different physical forms: A chokepoint may be maritime, land-based, airspace-related or digital. Pipelines, rail corridors and undersea cables can also function as chokepoints.
  • Limited alternatives: Its strategic importance comes from the absence of easy substitute routes.
  • Control and denial: Monitoring, controlling or disrupting the passage can become a powerful political, economic or military lever.

  • Strait of Hormuz: Carries a significant share of global oil exports from Gulf producers.

  • Geopolitical tension: Security conditions are shaped by the relationship between Iran, Gulf states, external naval powers and global energy consumers.
  • Disruption risk: Naval blockades, mines, missile threats or attacks on shipping can rapidly affect global prices and insurance costs.
  • Limited substitution: Alternative pipelines and routes can reduce some pressure but cannot easily replace the full volume moving through Hormuz.

  • Tri-service presence: They host India’s only integrated tri-service command, strengthening coordination among the army, navy and air force.
  • Logistics and response: Forward facilities can support surveillance, logistics and rapid military response in the eastern Indian Ocean.
  • Sea-lane security: The island chain contributes to anti-piracy activity, protection of shipping and wider Indo-Pacific power projection.

Can India block the Strait of Malacca?

India cannot unilaterally “choke” or close the Strait of Malacca. It is an international waterway bordered by Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, and India does not possess territorial control over the passage itself.

  • Strong observation, not ownership: India’s island position provides surveillance and monitoring advantages but does not confer legal or physical control over the strait.
  • Conflict-time influence: In an extreme conflict scenario, India could seek to disrupt traffic indirectly through naval presence, sea-denial operations or coordination with partners.
  • International consequences: Any attempted closure would damage global commerce, affect many neutral states and invite a strong international response.
  • Practical strategic purpose: India’s more credible posture is deterrence, maritime-domain awareness and protection of sea lanes rather than permanent closure.

The strategic value of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands therefore lies in oversight, rapid response and the ability to complicate an adversary’s planning—not in routine unilateral control of Malacca.
