Global fertility is falling toward, and in most countries below, the replacement level of 2.1 children per woman, with the UN putting the world average near 2.25. Overview
Before looking at fertility rates themselves, it helps to see the bigger picture: how the world's population has grown across history, where today's 8.3 billion people actually live, and how India's own fertility rate has moved over the last four decades. Meaning of fertility
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) is the standard measure of fertility: the average number of children a woman would have over her lifetime if current age-specific fertility rates continued through her reproductive years. It is a distinct concept from the simple birth rate, and it is measured against a replacement threshold of roughly 2.1 children per woman.

What took generations to unfold in the earliest-transitioning countries has, in recent decades, become a genuinely global trend touching nearly every region — including a fast-growing cluster of countries whose fertility has fallen so far it now sits well below replacement level.
- A sharp fall since mid-century: global fertility has fallen sharply since the mid-20th century — the TFR was about 4.9 children per woman in the 1950s, compared with about 2.3 in 2023.

India's own fertility story now mirrors the global one, and in several respects has moved even faster: the country is already below replacement level, with wide gaps between states and between rural and urban India.
- A steady multi-decade decline: India's TFR was 4.3 in 1985 and it has been falling by around 0.06 per year since then.
- Sex ratio moving toward natural levels: India's sex ratio at birth continues moving toward natural levels, growing from 907 girls per 1,000 boys in 2018–2020 to 918 in 2022–2024, against a natural benchmark of around 952 without sex selection.

Fertility is not only a demographic statistic — it is a slow-moving but powerful force in geopolitics, shaping labour supply, military manpower, tax bases and the global balance of influence over the coming decades.
- Reshaping national capacity: fertility shapes the future size of national populations, which affects labour supply, military recruitment pools, consumer markets, tax bases, and pension burdens.
- Strain in low-fertility countries: countries with very low fertility, such as parts of East Asia and Europe, face ageing populations, shrinking workforces, and rising pressure on healthcare and pension systems.
- A conditional dividend for younger nations: countries with younger, faster-growing populations may gain a demographic dividend only if they can create jobs, education, health systems, and political stability for young people.
- A shifting demographic centre: the global centre of demographic growth is shifting — studies project sub-Saharan Africa's share of global live births could rise from 29% in 2021 to more than half by 2100.
- New dependencies for low-fertility states: low-fertility countries may become more dependent on migration, automation, later retirement, and productivity growth, choices that will influence immigration politics, economic competition, and global power balances.
Future of humans
Population projections point to a world that keeps growing for a few more decades before it starts to shrink, and where the deeper challenge is not just how many people there are, but how old they are and how societies are structured around them.
